Mentoring, Tutoring, and Reading

Madison Middle School

Madison Middle School is centered right in South Tampa and has a large majority of students who live in poor economic conditions. Some are even homeless and come to school every day hungry. It is a Title 1 school which means that in about 700 students, 75% of them are on free or reduced price lunch. STF has created a student mentoring program and Madison was chosen to launch the program because of student need and faculty cooperation. There is an application process and background screening in order to become a mentor.

Ballast Point Elementary

The student mentoring program is being launched at Ballast Point Elementary as well. The current need is for volunteers to read to younger students. The mentor will work with the school’s guidance counselor and will go through the same application process at Madison. Additionally, several STF members who are retired teachers have volunteered and begun tutoring those students that have shown to be struggling in various subjects both at Madison Middle School and Ballast Point Elementary.

Military Ministry

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon: Praying and Providing.

In an effort to show our STF military members, their families, and also our supporting contractors ongoing support, we want to sustain a spiritual lifeline through prayer, communication, and packages from the folks back home. It is also our desire as a church fellowship to stand behind and support the families who remain at home while their loved one is away. Among the volunteers that have signed up to provide support are active duty military, retirees, and former military dependents. They know the drill, the needs, and many volunteers have a relative, neighbor, or friend in the military that has a heart to honor those who serve. We are beginning to organize our action teams. The teams are:

1.Praying – Adopt a deployed member or family for prayer. 2.Providing – Assist families and spouses of a deployed member with any need, such as child care, transporation, home or car projects, inviting them to Bible study class, etc. 3.Feeding – Take a service member/ family out to lunch/dinner, invite them to the Wednesday night church supper, a Sunday lunch, or a meal in your home.

Global Media Outreach (GMO)

An internet ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ has websites where thousands of people every day learn about the good news of Jesus and connect with online missionaries through email because millions of people search for God everyday – online. There is an application process and once approved there is four weeks of training. At the end of training, graduates are assigned to the STF community and serve as an online missionary with GMO.
