Surrender - Part 2 (11-16-08) Listen |
Message Outline

Surrender – Jonah: The Repentant Prophet
Before we can preach the gospel to others, we must learn to preach it to ourselves. Someone has said: "Until we realize we are not competent to run our own lives, we are not competent to run our own lives."
Today we enter the belly of the fish with Jonah where Jonah begins his heart felt prayer to God. While his prayer has a familiar Biblical ring to it, it’s what he doesn't say that prompts us to learn some vital lessons about both repentance and surrender

Surrender - The Reluctant Prophet (11-09-08) Listen |
Message Outline

Surrender – The Reluctant Prophet
God works through those who obey, though often times our nature rebels against Him. Regardless of which path we choose – surrender or rebellion – God is the God of second chances. Few stories illustrate this principle more clearly and more powerfully than the book of Jonah, mainly because this is the story of a prophet’s life.
Jonah is quite unlike the other Minor Prophets because the Book of Jonah has no prophecy and contains no message; the story is the message. Although he wrote or narrated the book himself, the prophet Jonah did not cast himself as the hero of the Story. Instead, Jonah is a history lesson about the real hero of the story, the living God.
Our journey through the text will reveal that there is a lot of Jonah in us too. God will pursue us, and in His grace, bring us to the end of ourselves to offer us Himself instead.

We round off our "On the Stump" series today with a look into Matthew chapter 7, a passage where Jesus outlines three choices people have to make concerning His teaching. What we discover today is that it is not who sits in the White House that brings us the eternal security we all desire, but who sits in our house, our hearts.

We have reached session 4 of our On the Stump series examining the teaching of Jesus regarding the change we all need. On the Stump: Change
As the election approaches, how many times do you think we will hear the word "change?" Too many to count. Today we are going to look at our need for change. This is not a political or even a national need that we will speak of today; it is merely an honest confession that I, personally, need things in my life to change. Perhaps you will admit to the same thing.
John McCain announces, "Change is coming."
Barak Obama preaches a "Change you can believe in."
Jesus also ran on the platform of change. His mantra was a little different: "Change. It begins with belief."
Today you will have an opportunity to cast your vote for change.

On the Stump: Stop, Look and Listen
Today we begin a brand new 5-part series entitled, "On The Stump Timeless Truths You Can Trust." The phrase "on the stump" comes from old-time politicians tendencies to climb up on a tree stump and give a speech. With elections on everyone's mind, promises being made left, right and center, we tackle 5 themes central to the election: truth, change, future, hope, and security. In this series we will work our way through the Sermon on the Mount, showing how the words of Jesus are timeless truths we can all trust.

Lord of the Rings: Ring of Fire
After the death of Princess Diana, television networks in the UK remembered her life by showing the royal wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Pastor Craig was with a group of unbelieving teenagers at a weekend retreat as one of the girls said, "Who wouldn't want a wedding like that?" There were horses, carriages, royalty, celebrities and of course the adoring crowds that lined the street. That got him thinking, how can something that starts so well end so badly? How does something that seems so right go so wrong? In the fourth message in our Song of Solomon study, Pastor Craig shares practical ideas to help us keep our marriages consumed by the fires of passion.

Lord of the Rings: Ring of Conflict
In the first week of our series, we listened in on our lovebirds as they sang the melodies of attraction. Last week we peeked in on their wedding night, discovering the way the Bible views sexual intimacy. This morning we look at this couple's first fight. One of life's many experiences that makes love full and mature is learning how to get through the conflicts that are inevitable in any relationship, especially marriage. Conflict in marriage is unavoidable. In today's message we turn to the Song of Solomon once more as Pastor Todd reveals five rules for wearing the ring of conflict.

Lord of the Rings: Ring of Intimacy
Next to salvation, sexual intimacy is one of the greatest gifts God gave to human beings. In our culture, however, sexual intimacy has been reduced to nothing more than a biological function. In our study of the romantic book called the Song of Solomon, we discover two love-birds filled with sexual desire who have saved themselves for their wedding night. Last week they sang the 8 melodies of attraction to each other, and today we’re going to see them consummate the marriage with sexual intimacy. Intimacy is really like a multi-faceted diamond. It has emotional, mental, physical/sexual, and spiritual sides to it. What we'll discover today is that only when all sides are in view can the splendor of the ring of intimacy be experienced.

Unfinished Mission
We conclude our three-week walk through the New Testament book of Titus today with a look at our Unfinished Mission. To date, we've discovered that God has left us in Tampa "for a reason" (1:5), calling us to live out our faith through grace in love in such a way that the glory of Christ is seen in all we say and do. That, we have seen, is only possible when we keep the Word constantly in mind. With Titus 3:3-8 before us, Pastor Craig finishes the series challenging us to hold on to four truths that help us devote ourselves to doing what is good, right and profitable to God’s kingdom.

We continue our Unfinished series by turning our attention to Titus chapter 2. Over the next two Sundays we'll examine two of the greatest theological passages in the entire NT, beginning today with Titus 2:11-15. The central question today is, "Why is God's Word so important, and what role will it play in the future of STF?"
You may be new to STF, seeking a church home or simply wondering why STF continues to put so much emphasis on the truth of God’s Word. Pastor Craig walks us through Titus chapter 2 today, revealing the strategic necessity of God's Word for the local church and the powerful impact it can have on the lives of those who listen and obey it.

Playing the Game God's Way - Colossians 3:12-17
Today's Message: Pastor Craig Rees
Playing the Game God's Way
Next week one of the most controversial Olympic Games of all time will begin. In time for that, Pastor Craig turns to the theme of sport. Someone has said, "Winning isn't the main thing, it's the only thing." Too many Christians approach games with attitudes that appear to leave their Christian principles out of the equation. Can a Christian play, win or lose, and not agree that winning is the only thing? What is it about games that can encourage some of our more ungodly characteristics?
Turning to Colossians 3:12, Pastor Craig demonstrates that when we play and how we honor God in the process communicate a loud message. When we hear "Play ball!" or "Let the games begin!" or "Take your mark!" let us remember that, whether as participants or spectators, God can honor our games, but He requires an attitude that honors Him.

Today Pastor Craig continues his teaching on the parable of the prodigal son. At the beginning of the parable, the younger son is alienated and rebellious while away from home. But in today’s passage, we will see that the older son was alienated and rebellious while at home. He saw himself as the model son, but at heart he was self-righteous. He did not understand what being a son meant.

Today's Message: Pastor Craig Rees
Lost: Turning Around, Not Turning Back
Today Pastor Craig continues his message on the parable of the prodigal son. The young son's search for freedom has gone horribly wrong. He'd been wasteful with his money, but eventually he came to his senses. The key question concerns his motivation. What motivates his repentance? Is it the way he handled his money or his awareness of his sin?
In this second part of our series, Pastor Craig will show us that repentance is not the way we earn God's forgiveness and love. Repentance is merely the way we receive it. Jesus calls us to act like the younger son. He wants us to drop any ideas of serving our way to salvation, and be overwhelmed by grace and enter our Father's house as sons.

Today's Message: Pastor Craig Rees
Lost: Amazing Love
What would you do for your child's personal freedom? What if they wanted to use their portion of the inheritance now rather than later? That's exactly how Jesus begins the story of the prodigal son -- in a shocking way. He tells of a son so hungry to see the world that he wished his father dead. The father's response was something not done in all of history. Through this parable Jesus raises the temperature on an understanding of God's love and His attitude towards sinful people.
Today Pastor Craig shows us how this familiar parable expresses amazing insight about our Heavenly Father's love for all people: those who deny his existence, those who live as though he were dead, and even those who live as though they own all that is rightly His.

Closing Doors -- Saying Goodbye to Your Past
Some of the hardest doors to close are doors to the past. That's because letting go of the past is one of the hardest things to do. We know we should do it, and we beat ourselves up inside when we don't do it, but we struggle to do it. But do it we must. Closing doors means moving on. Moving on to what is not clear to us yet, but it's clear to the One who knows the future.

Slamming Doors -- Saying Goodbye to Anger
Moses carried the dream in his heart for years. He journeyed far, experienced much and got close to the Promised Land without making it. The reason? His temper got the better of him, and the doors to the Promised Land were slammed shut. Moses should have dealt with his anger years before but didn't, and it was this failure, not the beating of the rock, that cost him his dream. In this message Pastor Craig encourages us not to slam too many doors, or it could end up costing us something we lived our whole life to see.

If it is God's desire for us to open our door and connect with others, then He wants us to do it well. An emotionally healthy community has difficult aspects to it. To do community well is not easy. If we do community easily, we are probably not doing it right. Doors - A People of Love (04-27-08) Listen |
Message Outline
Today's Message: Pastor Craig Rees
Doors - Series Overview
A door is defined as a means of entry or access, something that allows us to move from one environment to another. In the physical sense we understand that. From front doors to garage doors, office doors to back doors, we are continually moving from one place to another. We are confronted with doors every day. But when it comes to life, when it comes to relationships, are we aware that there are doors we consciously choose to open and close? These doors can have serious repercussions or abundant rewards for our relationships, depending on what we do with them. In this new series, Pastor Craig takes a closer look at some relational doors. As he unlocks the secret of the doors, we'll discover how in any given moment life often boils down to a single question: What are we going to do with the door?
Open Doors - A people of love
You've seen the advertisements: "Church of 30 people desires hard-working, highly-motivated Bible-based preacher to make a church grow..." With all due respect to the churches that put out ads like that, these words betray an unfortunate attitude. What they are saying is -- we'll grow if we have the "right preacher." That's not right. Pastor Craig begins this new series by suggesting that the greatest gift God gives to His church is not a preacher, but the love of God that has been poured into the hearts of His people. Love opens doors.

Treasure Quest - Committed
From the beginning of time we've been fascinated by treasure. Generations of kings, queens and emperors stockpiled it. Pirates fought for it, stole it and buried it, only to go on endless searches to find it again! Times have changed, but attitudes haven't. Pastor Craig continues to share qualities to help us store treasure where it really matters. When it comes to our treasure quest, there's only one map to follow. And when we follow God's Word, the treasure we find is much more valuable than the earthly treasure we so often uncover in our lives.
Committed Christians know that all they own and possess belongs to the Lord, but how does that practically play out in our lives? The third and final message in this series brings home the spiritual reality that a major aspect of honoring God relates to how we manage and allocate the tangible blessings God has given us. As we'll see today from Matthew 25:14-30, in the kingdom there is no such thing as unfulfilled potential.

God's antidote for materialism is giving. Pirates fought for it, stole it and buried it, only to go on endless searches to find it again! Times have changed, but attitudes haven't. We still follow ancient practices and gather as much treasure as possible. But so often, our treasure quest on earth is really a futile attempt to store wealth that fades. In this new series, Pastor Craig shares three qualities to help us store treasure where it really matters. When it comes to our treasure quest, there's only one map to follow. The Unexpected
Easter provides us with the one question we cannot ignore: what do you do with an empty tomb? What do we do when we search the cave only to find the doorway wide open, the grave clothes lying disheveled to the side, and only the faint smell of spices hanging in the air? Just like everything else in Jesus' life, the Resurrection evoked contrasting responses from those who encountered it. For some, the missing body confirmed the doubts they'd had all along -- just another hoax or another fanatic with some magic up his sleeve. Yet for others, for those who by faith followed this phenomenon all the way, the resurrection was the first in a long string of miracles that would change their lives forever. Easter became the preview of ultimate reality. Death is reversible. He is alive.

God is a great mathematician.
But it is not just the presence of the number 7 that makes us think that. It is the significance of the number 7. Nowhere do we see that more clearly than when the Bible talks about forgiveness. All have sinned, and God knows who we are and what we have done. But God forgives us and loves us anyway. And we do have something better to do than to stand around and point fingers. We can do what Jesus did. We can forgive and go out and share God's forgiveness with others. The Bible passage we will reference today is Matthew 18:21-35.
